The RMIT Redbacks have secured a major signing to the 2021 coaching line-up with Gold Coast Suns’ forward Sarah Perkins recommitting to the club as a specialist coach and mentor.
27-year old Perkins joined the Redbacks as a mentor last January and provided game awareness tutorials for players via Zoom following VAFA’s cancellation of the season.
“The key areas will be to mentor girls with their pathway into VFLW,” says Perkins. “I would love to see them improve their football IQ and an understanding of their game plan and how to create football goals.”
Perkins was taken by Gold Coast with pick 23 in the 2020 AFLW draft following a career with Adelaide for whom she was a premiership player in 2017. The fledgling Suns are in their second season following an encouraging maiden expedition in 2020 and Perkins was appointed to the leadership group earlier this week.
With coaching aspirations on her mind, she hopes that the leadership experience she gains in 2021 at both AFLW and VAFA level will bolster her knowledge base.
“I’m hoping that my position at RMIT will continue to help me grow as a coach and give me more confidence with my mentoring and coaching.”
Academy President Sally Tanner says that securing Perkins to the program will assist the Redbacks develop their professionalism and aptitude on and off the field.
“Sarah will be mentoring players aspiring to VFLW level and she will also be supporting the coaching team with game plans and video analysis.
“Her passion for coaching and developing others and her ability to breakdown the basics will benefit all facets of the RMIT Redbacks organisation in 2021.”
